Match Trivia
This holiday fixture was played at Ewood Park, Blackburn in unsettled weather on very heavy ground, before 4000 spectators. The Rovers played reserve men in goal and centre half, but the Rangers had their full team out. The Rangers playing with the wind in their favour, attacked at once, and Miller put in a couple of fine but ineffective shots, while a third from Hyslop struck Brandon as he fell under the crossbar. Seven minutes from the start Miller headed a pretty goal from a corner. At the other end Proudfoot, with the goal absolutely at his mercy, fell in the mud and Dickie cleared. The game continued to very evenly contested, both sides playing good football, notwithstanding the fearful ground. The Rangers left wing then got up, and A Smith scored a second point with a long shot, which passed just under the bar. Dashing away, the Rovers inside men looked dangerous, but with an open goal, Wilkie shot high over the bar. For some time the Rovers kept the Rangers on the defensive, but shooting was generally feeble, although Dickie twice saved grand efforts by Nicol and Proudfoot. Then Low broke away with a clear course, and shooting obliquely, the ball glanced off Brandon into the net. Just before the interval Killean stopped a shot from Miller with his hand, and Hyslop had no difficulty in scoring from a penalty kick awarded. At half-time the score stood :- Rangers 4; Rovers 0. The second half opened with a series of smart attacks by Rovers, but Dickie was very safe. McPherson scored a palpable off-side goal, but the referee balanced this by disallowing an equally good point scored by Miller. Desperate Efforts were made by Proudfoot and Nicol to get through, but Drummond and Smith were unbeatable. Booth scored for Rovers from a free kick. N Smith played a magnificent game all through. The final score was :- Rangers five goals; Rovers one
