Although there was not a deal of excitement at Ayr, where the Rangers won by 3 goals to 1, the interest was maintained right up to the close of the game. Ayr scored first through Marshall, who lobbed the ball over Lock’s head into the net. But the United didn’t long retain their lead. One of Scott Duncan’s ‘specials’ found Paterson, their Cowdenbeath recruit, ready and willing, and on went the equaliser - off ‘the Fifer’s’ head. After this the Ibrox team had more of the play, but the last quarter was entered on before the new centre-forward improved their position by scraping one of Cairn’s slip past Kerr. Ayr played desperately now – and more particularly McLaughlin, the elder Cringan, Bell and Hay. The Rangers’ attacks were stopped without ceremony, and Marshall and his confreres gave Lock several chances to distinguish himself. But no Ayr goals. Instead, the United defence was found wanting, and Lawson sent across a nice ball, which Duncan followed into the net. After that the home team cracked up, and the Rangers prevailed
