Match Trivia
Dispel from your mind the impression that because Rangers finished two goals ahead they won comfortably. It was as dour a struggle as has been seen on Somerset Park. Both teams set up a pace that would have satisfied a racecourse gathering. There were no periods of sustained pressure. Hardly was the ball away from one goal than it was flashing about at the other end. That the scoring was delayed until the last fifteen minutes was due to the grand work of the defenders. ‘Cameron’s’ kicking was a treat, while the generalship of Brewster and Dixon could hardly have been surpassed. So resourceful, however, were all the backs and half-backs that the attackers were presented with few ‘certs.’ At the same time, shooting was not a feature of the game. The second half was well under way before the first real thrill was provided. ‘Morton’ volleyed from thirty yards range and just as the ball was curling in at the near post Shingleton, who took Hempsey’s place for the day, throw himself at the leather and cleared. Next minute Andrew Cunningham brought Lock to his knees with a stinging drive along the carpet. These two efforts seemed to rouse the other forwards to a sense of their duty, and afterwards both keepers were called upon more frequently than during the whole of the earlier exchanges. Sixteen minutes from the finish McDiarmid with an effort which caused him to hurt his head, nodded past Lock from close in, and a few minutes later Cairns from a difficult angle hooked the ball into the net. There was really no outstanding forward, and the spoiling work of the middle divisions made parlour play impossible. In the fleeting raids on goals ‘Morton’ and Crosbie might have brought joy to the ‘honest men’ had they not finished so rashly? Both Brown and Cunningham were too well guarded to do damage
