Match Trivia

Played on the Villa’s ground at Perrybar, Birmingham. A strong wind was blowing down the hill giving the teams in turn a decided advantage. The Glasgow men won the toss and elected to play with the wind and hill in their favour, Brown kicking off for the home team. The first noticeable bit of play was a pretty passing run by Vaughton and Davis; but R Young and McIntyre were all there, returning the ball to midfield, Inglis and Corbett carrying it to the Villa quarter. After some good play on both sides the Scotchmen pressed the home team and a goal was kicked, which was however disallowed on the ground of off-side. Shortly after the visitors by some clever combined play gained a goal in fifteen minutes from the start, kicked out of a scrimmage by Ramsay. Still holding a small lead the Scotchmen some fifteen minutes later gained another goal and although pressing their opponents up to halftime, failed to add to the score, the game at halftime standing two to none in favour of the visitors. From halftime a decided advantage was held by the home team, the wind telling against the visitors and from a splendid combined run by the Villa forwards Whateley gave the finishing touch scoring No.1 for the Villa. Some clever runs by Brown, Davis and Vaughton were well repulsed by the Scotch backs division in which McIntyre and Ricketts were conspicuous but at last by a thrown in by Bryan, Vaughton scored a goal which was disputed and the referee gave his decision in favour of the home team, the game now standing two each. The Villa forwards playing grandly together still pressed the visitors and Bryan at halfback being well up got the ball and dodging four or five of his opponents scored a splendid goal with a low shot. No further score being gained the Villa were left the winners of a splendid contested match by three goals to two. For the Rangers the most conspicuous forwards were McNeil, Ramsay and Inglis, the back division all played a sound game. The home team played a good game in the second half the forwards playing together JD Bryan and Harvey rendering good service at their posts.
