Match Trivia
An evenly-contested game was witnessed by about 2000 spectators at Gayfield last night on the occasion of the visit of Rangers to Arbroath in a benefit match on behalf George Hardie, the Maroons popular forward. Rangers led at the interval by two goals, both scored by Marshall at centre, and shortly after the resumption he completed his hat-trick. Newman headed the ball past Hamilton to reduce the leeway, and just before the final whistle Lowe added a second, Rangers running out winners by the odd goal in five. The star of the Rangers side was Marshall, the centre, who proved himself an opportunist by the scoring of his goals. Of the homesters Newman, on the left-wing, and Gentles and Heigh, on the right, caught the eye. Towards the close an unfortunate mishap occurred to Heigh, Arbroaths inside right. In falling he tore a tendon in his knee and had to be assisted off. As a result, it is feared that he will not be available for Saturdays game at Greenock. The Earl of Strathmore and Mr Gavin Ralston, Glamis, attended the match.
