Match Trivia

The visit of the Glasgow Rangers to Alloa on Monday, coupled by the Athletic’s great victory of Saturday, was the means of bringing out another record crowd to the Recreation Grounds. Unfortunately the Athletic were unable to put out their full teams, whereas the Rangers sent through a strong side. Fulton did not take the field at the start, and McMillan took up his position in goal. Disaster befell the Alloa at the start, as Bauchop was forced to retire owing to a knee injury, and they were left with nine men. Taking advantage of Alloa’s weakness Jacky Robertson soon got two goals for the Rangers. Fulton and Forsyth now appeared and an improvement was shown by the home team. Dickie was soon tested but found safe. Tricky work by Walker got the Rangers back to the attack. All the play at this time came from the Rangers and Kerr scored a third goal, while a little later Robertson put on a fourth. Alloa played pluckily but the defence against them was too much. Half-time arrived with the Rangers leading by 4 goals to 0. In the second half the spectators got better value for their money, as the ‘Wasps’ quite held their own for a time with their redoubtable opponents. Walker and Robertson continued to display good form, while ‘Jock’ Drummond was always closely watched when he got his foot on the ball. Fulton continued to save well in goal, while Miller, who now occupied outside right, always made good progress when he got the ball from Young. After Alloa had had hard lines with a corner, McMillan gave Dickie a scorcher to hold, which he cleverly did. Alloa was doing all the pressing at this time, and after Miller and Fraser had had hard lines, Young scored, but offside was given. Latterly the Rangers got away, and Robertson put them five up. Not to be denied, the locals played up pluckily and at last they were rewarded with a goal, Forsyth beating Dickie with a brilliant effort, the ball going ain at the far post. McMillan was the outstanding player for Alloa at this period, and his dodging of numerous opponents was applauded. Near the close the Rangers again showed their superiority over Athletic’s mixed-up team, and Paton scored two fine goals for his side. Full time was shortly afterwards called, and the result of a somewhat disappointing game was – Rangers 7 goals; Alloa Athletic 1 Yesterday a holiday match was played at the Recreation Grounds, Alloa between the above clubs in presence of a large assemble. The ground was soft and spongy, and good football was rendered difficult. The Rangers who had their full League team had the best of matters in the first half, when for a time, Alloa played with 10 men, and at halftime led by 4 goals to nothing. Alloa showed up better in the second half, but failed to score till well on in the game, while the Rangers added another. Result – Rangers 5 goal: Alloa Athletic 1
