Match Trivia
In a fine and refreshing game Albion Rovers once again proved the Rangers’ Waterloo. The Coatbridge side displayed wonderful enterprise, and never at any period did they look inferior to the League leaders. All through the game Rovers were a very aggressive lot. Against the wind in the first half, they had often more of the play than their opponents. On one occasion Alan Morton looked well through, when he was brought down by Walls, for which a free kick was granted. Muirhead had a good try, the ball skimming the bar. Bennie was unlucky in not counting with a rocket shot, Robb saving in a miraculous manner. Thirty-two minutes after the start Jamison handled inside the penalty line, and this cost the Rangers a goal. Walls took the kick, and Robb almost saved, the ball just rolling over his hands at the corner of the post. The Rover defenders, particularly Penman, comported themselves soundly, and the Rangers’ forwards were never allowed to settle. The second half was full of thrills, and the pace was a cracker. In fourteen minutes, Alan Morton lobbed across, and Cairns equalised from close range. Shortly afterwards Sam Fleming collected a pass from the left and beat Robb with a rocket shot. The Rovers were top dog during the closing stages, and their victory over Rangers was no fluke, their win being thoroughly deserved on the run of play. Penman, Geddes, Christie and Bennie were outstanding for the Rovers. Alan Morton did nothing out of the ordinary. Cunningham, Archibald and Robb were the pick for Rangers
