Match Trivia
That score indicates the tremendous difference in class. It tells no more than the truth. The side Rovers were forced to turn out was simply overwhelmed by an Ibrox team that was always on a tight rein. Beattie started the avalanche in twelve minutes. If there was more than a suspicion of offside in Smiths first goal, there was nothing doubtful about the second. From eight yards his head simply bulleted home a perfect Venters cross. Beatties second counter put a blot on Hansons copybook and seemed to have knocked the bottom out of the game. When Dewar hit a couple of glorious 18-yarders past Dawson we sat up. But we immediately slumped back as Smith nodded through a beautifully placed free kick from Symon. The big fellow netted two more from two yards. The first put the right finish to a thrilling individual burst by Venters. The second completed clever combination by the left wing. If Rovers had just had an inside forward with only half the energy and cleverness of Venters they might have exploited McKillops weakness at centre half. Actually apart from two balls he picked out the net, both unsaveable Dawson handled the ball only four times. That tells its own tale of the effectiveness of the full backs mopping-up operations. Rovers juniors must have envied the sponsoring and spoon-feeding which the Ibrox youngsters receive from their elders. Beattie fully confirmed the high praise he got last week. Young McKillop is not so far up to grade, but he should make it. Smiths five goals came easily. But they were dividends for being on the right spot at the right time. Few Rovers deserve special mention. Their best triers were Hanson, Waddell, Miller, McLetchie and Dewar
