Match Trivia

The result of the Rangers v Albion Rovers game at Coatbridge probably justified general expectations, and on calm survey we must admit, apart altogether from the margin in goals, that the Glasgow club won with ease, and thoroughly deserved full points. The only goal in the first half was got by the Rangers, Henderson doing the needful with a long-range shot. Although the Rovers had the wind at their backs, they failed to equalise before the interval, although one shot in particular, from the toe of Ford, was worthy of count. Early on in the second half Morton got through, and passing to Cunningham, the latter took full advantage, and beat Kerr somewhat easily. This in no way staggered the Rovers. I was rather a tonic to be up and doing, for during the next fifteen minutes the Rangers’ defence had a worrying time, so persistent was the Cliftonhill attack. The unexpected happened, however, and the scene changed. Cairns bewildered everyone, not perhaps with his brilliant runs, but rather by the way he gathered the ball and popped it into the net on three successive occasions. His last was beauty, but the others might have been saved. And so, Rangers won by five clear goals because of their better balance, their confidence, and cohesion as a team. The Rangers were good value for their win in a game that did not contain a great lot of fine play. The heavy ground and high wind had much to do with the class of fare served up. Rangers’ success lay in the fact that they adopted the best methods to suit the conditions. Kerr did not suggest the same class in goal as Robb, and, indeed, the former never gave a worse display for the Cliftonhill club. The respective back lines were about equal. In the Rovers’ half-back line McSkimming’s nippiness and judgment made him rather outstanding. Ford was also clever. Rangers’ half-back trio had a big say in the victory. Forward, Rangers were ahead of the Rovers. Cairns was the hero of the hour, as his three goals suggest
