Match Trivia
From looking like a doddle for Rangers, who were three goals up in twenty minutes, this developed into one of the most thrilling games seen at Coatbridge for years. Rovers staged a wonderful recovery, and they drew level before half-time. Rangers having to defend desperately to prevent them from snatching the lead just before the interval. Rangers might trace the loss of a point to an injury to Waddell shortly after the second goal. He did not resume in the second half. Rovers Waddell was seventeen minutes late in resuming and during his absence Rangers attacked incessantly on the left. Venters twice and McNee striking the woodwork with terrific shots. When Waddell brought Rovers up to full strength again, it was Rangers turn for anxiety. Their short-handedness then became evident. Time and again, Rovers looked like getting the winner, but amidst tremendous excitement, Rangers held out and made a strong bid for the decider themselves in a terrific finish. Everything considered, a draw was the best result of an amazing game and the remarkably big crowd of about 10,000 went away thoroughly satisfied. Thornton, Venters and McNee scored for Rangers in eleven, fifteen and twenty-four minutes respectively. Beath got Rovers first from a penalty in thirty-one minutes, Bell the second in thirty-six minutes, and Kiernan equalised two minutes from the interval.
