Match Trivia
Seventeen thousand spectators viewed the game at Airdrie. Rangers played first with the strong wind behind them, and in five minutes Archibald found the net, but the whistle had previously sounded to cease play. But a few minutes later the right winger executed a brilliant solo run and beat Fotheringham. The Rangers were in brilliant form, taxing Airdrie’s defence fully till Henderson dropped on a cross from the right wing and score their second goal. The second half was a more even fight and a little luck might have given Airdrie a goal on two occasions. However, it fell to Morton to close the scoring, a great shot by the winger passing the Airdrie goalkeeper like a flash. The result – 3-0 in favour of Rangers – does not exaggerate their superiority. The defence of the Airdrieonians was commendable, especially on the part of Dick, Hart and Neil, but their attack was very ragged, and all the more so as Ellis was a cripple this half. On one occasion Robb was stretched to save from both Reid and Henderson, but most of Airdrie’s shots were wild, and there was little continued association between the forwards. The Rangers were strongest on their right wing, but all over they were too clever for the opposition. Morton was not much in evidence in the first half, but latterly was the chief raider. Airdrie’s attack was their weak point, although up to the time Ellis was winded their right wingers were clever
