Match Trivia

Up to a certain stage Airdrie gave the Rangers a stiff journey on Broomfield Park, but in the end victory deservedly went to the better balanced side. At the interval the teams were on an equality – one goal each – and while Rangers had perhaps been the more dangerous lot, Airdrie quite merited the equaliser, which was cleverly gained by Sam Young after good work by Neilson. In the second half the superiority of the winners were most pronounced. Indeed the turning point in the game occurred when, after the resumption, Bennett scored from a penalty kick awarded against Taylor. Once on level terms the Rangers looked all over winners, and the margin of goals in their favour at the close was no more than they deserved. The re-appearance of both Law and Bennett made for strength in defence and attack, and the Rangers may be said now to be well prepared for the serious work of the ties. The home side was not at full strength, Duff being still a conspicuous absentee. Combe, the Bellshill youth, was dropped, preference being given to Young at centre forward. From start to finish it was a capital game, and the spectators were afforded plenty of excitement. Airdrie gave a good account of themselves, and were not so much out of it as the result would seem to indicate. Lock brought off many good saves. Where the visitors held the biggest advantage was in attack. Bennett and Smith combined nicely together, while Bowie was altogether and ideal partner for Hogg. Reid demonstrated his ability as an opportunist by smartly snatching two of the four goals credited to his side. Bennett scored from the penalty alluded to, while Hogg was also successful in bearing Ewart. Somehow or other, Airdrie’s front line did not move in unison. Individually they were all that could be desired, but as a combination they were not a success. The result was that Gordon, Galt and Hendry had little difficulty in dealing with such haphazard efforts. The best of the five were Thomson and Donaldson, although Young showed a considerable amount of dash and energy. For Airdrie Ewart, Hill and Taylor put up a most resolute defence, and for quite a long time gave the Rangers little scope. Hill was ever in the thick of it, and he emerged with credit from a particularly heavy afternoon’s work. Murphy at centre half carried out his mission of shadowing Reid quite successfully, although with Duff in his accustomed place, Airdrie’s middle line would have been materially strengthened. Williams gave a taking display, but J Young was disposed to be over-reach. Gordon was not bettered by any half back on the field, and there was little to cavil at in the work of Hendry. Law made a surprisingly good appearance, while Bennett after his enforced rest through injury was as tricky and as lively as ever.
