Match Trivia

Airdrie quite merited the brace of points which they secured. The team of all the talents was badly served on the whole by their front rank, and it was in this department chiefly that the homesters excelled. If Webb’s opening form is nay criterion of what may be expected of him during the remainder of the season, then the home supporters will speedily be reconciled to the loss of Hunter. The old Manchester player gave a faultless display, and the understanding between his comrades and himself was most refreshing, when contrasted with the singular lack of cohesion in the city club’s attack. The opening passages clearly favoured the Rangers, but the forwards failed to give even glimpses of their goal-getting reputation. Hunter and Reid were most unfortunate in their deliveries, but it has to be admitted that the extreme wingers, Bennett and Smith, centred less accurately and timeously than of old, the obvious result being that the inside men had less opportunity of distinguishing themselves. Hogg was very much in evidence throughout the game, and it was no fault of his that his side were in the minority at the close. He wrought untiringly, and it was but fitting the one who had exhibited the superlative form should have the credit of registering Rangers’ solitary point. Up to the time that Donaldson scored the opening goal, the provincial team had the worst of the exchanges. Naturally, this success had a stimulating effect, and when Webb smartly added a second it was generally conceded that Rangers would have a strenuous task to escape defeat so confidently and cleverly were Rombach and Davidson, aided by the halves, checkmating the move of the opposing forwards. In the past the Airdrieonians have proved themselves adepts in packing their goal, and on Saturday they emphasised that reputation, although it must also be added that in the closing stages over anxiety in the danger zone married much of the good play shown in the outfield by the Rangers. On the day’s play, the homesters are in every department has effective and sound as they were last season. On Broomfield Park few clubs will have an easy journey. Webb thus early has proven a capable successor to Hunter, while Jack Finlay of cerned Vale of Leven, and Stewart of Linfield, are splendid acquisitions to the middle line. Duncan was as safe as old, while Davidson fulfilled his mission – which was to give Hunter as little rope as possible. More over his clean punting was quite reminiscent of his brilliant form two years ago. Rombach showed his characteristically good general-ship, and scarcely made a mistake. All three halves were good, McGran was forceful and energetic and both Stewart and Finlay caught the eye as stylish players, who will even improve as the season advances. In the front rank the most serviceable and profitable work was done by Webb, Donaldson and Thomson. Young and Nicol were by no means failures, but they did not figure quite so much in the picture as the three inside men already named. With the remark that Hogg and Bennett were the only two to realise expectations, the vanguard of the visitors may thus adequately be passed over. Galt was the best half, his forcing tactics being of considerable advantage to his side in such a game. Craig and McKenzie both did remarkably well at back, the former, if anything, taking the eye most for clever tackling and sure kicking. Lock had not the slightest chance of saving one or other of the goals, and his reputation was in no way prejudiced
