Match Trivia
Sensation of sensations! Scotlands Jerry Dawson sent off. Along with him Tom Mooney, Airdries Anglo outside-left from Newcastle. That was the terrific climax to the most exciting game Ive seen for years. Airdrie were fighting for an equaliser, when Dawson and Mooney clashed. Fists were soon flying freely. It looked like a riot when players of both sides joined in with raised hands and raised voices. Finally, Mooney and Dawson walked off, the Airdrie man streaming blood from a slip eyebrow. Dawson took off his jersey on the field; walked to the pavilion stripped to the waist. For the last ten minutes Rangers with Scot Symon in goal, fought successfully with nine men to preserve their unblemished record. Theyd lost Bobby Bolt with a twisted knee in the first five minutes took the lead soon after through a Venters penalty. Star of the day was Willie Thornton; his dribbling was a delight, his passing accurate. And Rangers owed much to Smith, Venters, Symon, Gray and Shaw. Airdrie didnt deserve to lose; they fought with a will and a real degree of skill. They were brilliantly served in goal, had sound defenders in the backs and Willie Bruce. Forwards were clever but punchless. I liked Russell best. But the abiding memory of the game must be its sensational climax. It started more than one free fight.
