Match Trivia

Fifteen thousand watched this game at Airdrie, which was of two halves in more respects than one. The first was fast, with brilliant episodes; the second petered out to commonplace. Airdrie began with great gusto and had the Rangers defence beaten twice inside a couple of minutes. A visit to Shortt by the Rangers was followed by a deft move by Reid, and his perfect centre allowed Henderson to head a brilliant goal. The Rangers were not long in making up the leeway, for Henderson drove home a fine cross from Cairns. Keeping up their form, Cunningham, from a corner kick, was rather lucky in scraping the ball into the net for what proved the last goal of the game. The first half was splendidly contested, with the Rangers a shade the better side. Cunningham was the one great man of their attack, with Archibald and Cairns following hard for honours. Henderson was not much seen, and Morton less. As a matter of fact, the famous left winger has seldom done worse. In the second half the Ibrox attack was reduced to a small thing. Preston had Morton at his mercy, and Bennie was often the master of Archibald. During the second half never one call was made on Shortt, whose hardest work was the backing of a few goal kicks. Meiklejohn and Muirhead were the stars of the Rangers middle line. Dixon had his match in Henderson. Manderson was most effective at back, but he had not the cute opposition that McCandless found in Reid’s craft and Ellis’ speed and control of the ball. Save the rockets off Henderson’s head that beat him, Robb gave a faultless display in goal, and saved a point at least. Airdrieonians’ defence was excellent all round. Both backs tackled and kicked well, but the secret of their success lay in their two young half-backs, Bennie and Preston. There were none better, and this applies particularly to the former. Hart’s advancement to the front did not weaken the line. Henderson was resolute all through. Ellis, for whom Manchester United have offered £3000, did not relish the way that Dixon and McCandless dealt with him, but may count that a compliment to his speed and his skill. The Rangers won with not an inch to spare. As a matter of fact, taking into consideration that they were reduced to second class in the last half, a draw was not more than their value in a game that was brilliant and moody in turn
