Match Trivia
The Airdrieonians engaged in a friendly game with the Rangers on Monday evening at Airdrie. There was a satisfactory attendance, the receipts totalling over £41. Both sides introduced new payers. The game that followed would not have led a stranger to easily spot the more famous Rangers. As a matter of fact, even against the wind in the first half the ‘Onians had a full share of the game, and the work of their forwards presented a delightful freshness that culminated in Thomson scoring the first goal, after Henderson had put in a useful centre that only needed clinching. The equaliser was not long in coming. Some fine work was shown on the Rangers’ left and the ball ultimately crossed over to Mackie. There was no doubt left about the issue. Mackie tried, and the ball left his foot at such speed that it passed Duncan almost ere he could raise his arm to stop the ball. Nothing further happened till half-time, and they crossed over with one goal each. For a time after resuming the Rangers were most oppressive, and Duncan had several very warm shots to negotiate. These were all stemmed, however, and soon the red stripes were in the thick of it again. Frank O’Rorke fairly roused the crowd to excitement with a terrific shot that was as splendidly saved by the old Falkirk keeper, while a minute later he just missed the mark with a header. At this time Thomson was perhaps, along with O’Rorke, the most aggressive forward, and quite capped the show when, a minute from the close, he accepted the ball off the left wing and promptly banged on what proved to be the last and winning goal. It goes without saying that the home crowd went away satisfied, and with good cause for their team at no period of the game looked beaten, but rather all along appeared equal to the task set them. Of course, we must not forget that the Rangers can improve much on their Monday’s representation, though they doubtless believed that the team sent to Airdrie would be quite equal to the task set them. Looked at from all points of view, the Airdrieonians’ first trial was a success, and some little careful trimming of the Broomfield team may be sufficient to at least uphold last season’s position in the League, if not somewhat better
