Match Trivia

First League football was began at Airdrie on Saturday when there was a crowd well on to 10,000 present, the gate yielding £212: including £22 at stands. Rangers had first to play against the breeze and Stark opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a beautiful shot that deceived Duncan and glanced off the post into the net. Nearing halftime Marshall the home side right half put in a fine shot, and ere Dickie could clear he was bustled by Tennant and Liddell who between them carried the ball into the net. At halftime the score stood 1 goal each. Shortly after resuming Speedie put his side one goal up, and for a time thereafter the Ibrox side was in the ascendant in play, but found the Airdrie defence difficult to negotiate. As time progressed the home side grew more confident, and their forwards especially the left wing time after time took play to Dickie who on one occasion had to throw himself on the ball and fling it over his line to save. An easy third goal followed for the Rangers a misunderstand between O’Rorke and Romback letting in Hamilton with naught to do but shoot the ball past Duncan. The last 10 minutes was splendidly contested each goal being tested in turn, but nothing further was done in the way of scores, and the Rangers won by 3 goal to 1. With better combination forward Airdrie should prove a sound member of the League. The gate taken caps all Lanarkshire club records by about £50Alarming Stand Incident at a Football Match – An Incident of a somewhat alarming nature, and revealing a new danger on grand stands, took place at the football match at Airdrie on Saturday. The people were crowding on to the grand stand, where already many had taken their seats, when smoke was seen issuing through the space between the planking from underneath. Someone had lit a match while smoking and dropped it through one of the spaces, and it had fallen among a quantity of shavings and other inflammable material. There was fortunately no panic, and the flames were speedily extinguished by pouring water through the slits and breaking open the side of the stand
