Match Trivia
Played on Accrington ground. The Rangers team was a pretty strong one and as the Accrington men had been so successful in Birmingham much interest was centred in the result. Accrington won the toss and Inglis started the ball. McGill scored first for the Accrington in 10 minutes amid loud cheers. Not very long thereafter the Accrington forwards again rushed up and Eastham headed a pretty goal. The visitors right next earned the cheers of the onlookers for their good passing. Inglis and indeed the whole of the visitors made several splendid attempts to get forward but the Accrington defence was superb and at Half time the game stood at 2 goals to nil in favour of the Englishmen. Resuming after a short interval the Rangers at once warmed to their work and a minute only had lapsed when after a corner kick Heggie returned the ball grandly to the home goal and Pringle scored. Four minutes later the visitors were again in attacking most energetically, Hindle missed his kick and Gossland kicked up. A slight scrimmage was formed from which the player named scored the equalising point. The home eleven now roused themselves and the play was of the finest character. Wilkinson got the ball and passed beautifully to Ewbank who crossed at the right moment to McGill and this player scored a good third goal amidst great cheering. The home forwards continued to play up in a grand manner but Duncan and Gordon played a grand back game for the visitors. Corbett made several good runs, and at times seemed extremely dangerous, but either one or the other of the Accrington backs got up at the right moment. Chew was not without work however and several times was called upon to save his lines, which he did gallantly. When the whistle sounded for time the game stood 3 to 2 in favour of Accrington. Inglis, Corbett and Gossland played a grand game for the losers Bryce, Eastham, McGill and Howarth for the winners. The team was afterwards entertained at dinner in the Railway Hotel.
