Match Trivia

On their trip to the Granite City the Rangers lacked the services of Law, Bennett, Stark, Galt and Lock, but so well did the substituted perform that the team could scarcely have been improved. From start to finish it was a ding-dong battle, waged at a great pace, and marked by some sparking football. Playing with the wing in the first half, the Rangers practically monopolised play for a tome, yet Aberdeen were the first to open the scoring. A clever piece of work on the part of Wilson allowed Tom Murray to beat Rennie after 20 minutes. The Ibrox men replied in great style, and even the stubborn defence offered by Aberdeen failed to keep them at bay. Time and again Murch’s charge escaped by the merest hairbreadth, and it was close on the interval before the long due equaliser was secured in brilliant fashion by Reid. Rangers were not so much in the picture in the second half, as far as attacking work was concerned, nut on numerous occasions during the last 25 minutes the Light Blues’ front rank proved a very dangerous lot. Still Aberdeen should have easily made victory secure, three glorious chances being allowed to go a-begging through over-anxiety. On one occasion after O’Hagan and Tom Murray had made futile attempts to pilot the ball into an open goal, Lennie, a few yards out, and with plenty of time at his disposal, shot right into Rennie’s hands. Thus the Rangers succeeded in sharing the points – and deservedly so. In attack Aberdeen were inferior to the Rangers. The Pittodrie front line, while putting in some clever work, lacked the balance of the Ibrox five. Tom Murray’s display at centre was an improvement on his earlier-in-the-season form, and he appeared to have quite recovered from his long indisposition. Simpson and Bert Murray as a pair were ahead of the left wing, but Lennie contributed several characteristic flashes. Wilson was the pick of the halves, and Coleman was much better than Hume, who sustained an injury early in the game. Mutch was as sure as ever, and while, not overtaxed, he effected numerous clever saves. In the Rangers’ front line McPherson was outstanding, his partner being too well watched by Wilson to be as effective as usual. Reid was very successful at centre, and Hogg when opportunity offered, was clever. Miller was rash at times. The halves were a hard-working and all-round effective trio, while Campbell and McKenzie were reliable, and Rennie displayed his old ‘cuteness and cleverness
