Match Trivia
The Rangers had to fight every inch of the way to save a point at Pittodrie last night. This goalless encounter was the fastest seen in Aberdeen this season and was brimful of thrills. For a while in the first half Aberdeen were rampant. Miller struck an upright from close range, and numerous other shots were blocked by Ibrox defenders. Alan Morton, who occasionally relieved the pressure, once finished off a fine individual run by shivering Blackwell’s timbers. The Glasgow team, however, were fortunate to be on level terms at tea-time. After the interval Aberdeen’s attack was disorganised through an injury to Thomson, who changed places with Bainbridge. The Rangers pressed for prolonged periods but could make nothing of the brilliant Pittodrie defence. Archibald came close to counting; he slammed the ball against an upright. Eight minutes before the end Archibald was brought down and the Rangers were awarded a ‘penalty’, but Blackwell saved Archie’s terrible drive. To the end the game was full of incidents. For Rangers, Robb was grand in the first half – his testing time. McCandless, Dixon and Nicholson were best of the other defenders, in front Morton was in a class by himself. Hansen was nippy in the centre but inclined to be selfish. Behind Aberdeen were as solid as granite Blackwell, Hutton, Forsyth, Thomson and Miller were outstanding.Archibald missed an 82nd minute penalty
