Match Trivia
An unusual amount of interest was manifested in the meeting of the Rangers with Aberdeen and the Granite City had a large importation of football enthusiasts from Glasgow, as well as from the North of Scotland. The railway companies gave special facilities to those desiring to travel to the capital of the North and the excursion trains were largely patronised. A record ‘gate’ was expected at Pittodrie, but the weather did its worst in the early part of the day to prevent the fulfilment of such as expectations. There were in fact doubts as to whether the tie would be played at all owing to the heavy snowfall on the previous day, but the ground although soft and muddy was declared to be playable, and by the time the match started the weather had cleared up beautifully. Notwithstanding the conditions of the pitch a rattling game was witnessed in the first period it seemed as if the Aberdeen men were to run out winners, for they scored a couple of goal, which the Rangers had not equalised when the ends were changed. The scorer of the two points for the homesters was Mackie and Dalrymple secured the goal for the Glasgow team. Both sides played a string and vigorous game in the second round, but the Rangers had the best of it, Dalyrmple again did the needful, and Hamilton had the credit of putting on the leading goal. The aggregate ‘gate’ amounted to £304 6s 7d including £51 3s 10d drawn at the stands.
