Match Trivia
The first of the League matches in Paisley this season was played on the ground of the Abercorn on Saturday, the home team having the Rangers as their opponents. There was a good attendance of spectators. Abercorn started the game, and scarcely a minute from the commencement Bruce, of the Rangers beat Gregg with a stinging shot. The Abercorn were apparently taken by surprise, and became more determined in their play. They visited the Rangers ground in a body, but were quickly repulsed. The Rangers came away again, and a shot from McInnes narrowly missed taking effect. The Rangers still kept up the pressure, and Marshall sent in a splendid sot, which however Gregg fisted out and just in the nick of time. Abercorn at this point forced the play, and the strangers were kept within their own precincts for some time. Some fine work took lace after this, both teams bringing their best tactics into play. A splendid piece of passing took place in front of the home goal, which resulted in J McPherson putting through the second point for the strangers. A scrimmage at the Rangers goal almost resulted in its downfall, a shot from Munro going over the bar by inches. Coming away again, the Rangers in the course of a few minutes put on the third goal from a shot by Bruce. Halftime sounded without any more scoring having taken place, and the teams crossed over with the game standing – Rangers 3; Abercorn 0. The Abercorn commenced the second half with more pluck than they had shown in the first portion of the game. Haddow was for a time pretty hard pressed, till a strong kick from J McPherson sent the ball into the Abercorn’s half of the field. The Rangers slowly but surely got the leather up to Gregg, but the wind being against them, their play had not so much effect as in the first half. Quigley succeeding in getting the ball away from the threatened danger. A free kick to the Abercorn close to Haddow looked hopeful. Unfortunately for the Abercorn, the ball was put through the goal without touching anyone. Still the home team maintained a pressure. Well supported by the back division, Abercorn’s forwards lay close to Haddow, whom with Scott and Drummond, they tested again and again, but the Paisley lads had no luck, and their work went for nothing. For fully half an hour the Abercorn had the better of the game. Gradually they were forced back, and now for a time Gregg had to show some cleverness, which he did in tuning back the efforts of the Rangers. Towards the end of the game Barker put on another point for the Rangers. No further scoring took place, and the match ended – Rangers 4 goals; Abercorn 0
