Graeme Souness completed the signing of England full back and current group member Gary Stevens for a fee of £1m, thus uniting him with international team mates Terry Butcher and Chris Woods.
At just 25 years of age, Stevens already had a wealth of experience having won the European Cup Winners Cup with Everton as well as two League Championships and an FA Cup.
During his first four seasons with Rangers, Gary was the model of consistency and picked up a further seven major honours. His fruitful partnership with Trevor Steven was resurrected in the summer of 1989 when Steven would make the same journey from Goodison Park to Ibrox.
Unfortunately, Stevens would suffer an injury whilst on international duty in the build up to the 1992 European Championships and this would curtail his Gers career, missing the majority of the Treble winning season of 1992/93. Gary did return to the side the following year but niggling injuries began to take their toll and, by 1994, he was allowed to move on.
In all, Gary made 246 competitive appearances winning nine major honours with Rangers. He scored 9 goals, including the first goal during the historic sequence of nine successive league titles.
