Ian Petrie Redford (1980-1985)

Ian signed for Rangers in February 1980 for a then club record fee of £210,000, going on to make 248 competitive first team appearances during his time at Ibrox. In that time he won the Scottish FA Cup once (1981) and the League Cup twice (1981/82 and 84/85).

A talented midfielder with a more than acceptable work rate, Redford was a strong, powerful runner who could get around the pitch and regularly help himself to a goal.

Redford scored 42 goals for Rangers including a vital last minute equaliser against his boyhood heroes, St.Johnstone, at Muirton Park on Valentines Day, 1981. That goal kept Rangers in the Scottish Cup and whilst he would suffer the disappointment of missing a last minute penalty in the final against Dundee United, Rangers would go on to win the replay.

Ian would make amends in the League Cup Final of the following season when his sublime chip on 88 minutes would win the Cup for Rangers, once again at the expense of United.

A move to Ipswich Town followed before returning home to fulfil his ambition of playing for St.Johnsone.

Eight years after leaving Rangers, Redford would complete a hat-trick of league cup winners medals when he was part of the Raith Rovers side who famously shocked Celtic at Ibrox Stadium.

Ian died in January 2014, aged just 53.
