Phil Bonnyman (1971 to 1973)
The left-sided midfielder joined Rangers from Anniesland Waverly in the early 1970's and spent two years at Ibrox.
Slotting in at the less familiar inside-right position, Phil made his only competitive appearance for Rangers in the League Cup defeat to Stenhousemuir at Ibrox on 4th October 1972 (Rangers were leading 5-0 from the first leg, thus still comfortably progressing 6-2 on aggregate). By Phil's own admission, he had somewhat of a "disastrous match". Six of the stating XI from Barcelona played against the 'Warriors'.
On being freed by the Club, Phil spent two years with Hamilton Academical before becoming a firm favourite at Brunton Park after Carlisle United swooped to sign him for £30,000 in March 1976.
Bonnyman played for the Cumbrians in the old English Second (now Championship) and Third Divisions, scoring 26 goals in just over 150 league appearances.
By the early 1980's, Phil was on the move again and his next stop was Chesterfield where he became their first ever six figure signing at £150,000.
Famously, Phil would score twice against Rangers as John Greig's side suffered a 3-0 humiliation in the second leg of the Anglo Scottish Cup quarter final at the Recreation Ground. With the first leg having ended in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox, Rangers were eliminated 4-1 on aggregate by the English Division Three league leaders. Incidentally, Chesterfield would go on to win the tournament.
Following a 5-year spell at Grimsby Town, Phil also represented Stoke City and Darlington. With an eye on the future, he returned to Scotland during season 1989/90 where he undertook a player/coach role with Dunfermline Athletic. Bonnyman stayed involved in the senior game until 2000, serving a number of different sides in various capacities. This included a spell as Manager of Highland League side, Huntly.
