Match Trivia
Jim McLean hasn’t played centre-forward for two years, but last night at Ibrox Clyde moved him back to his old spot, and he slammed in three goals . . . to knock Rangers out of the Charity Cup. What a great night it was for the McLean clan. For Rangers George McLean made sure he got HIS name on the score-sheet with two goals. Makeshift Rangers played six reserves. Although the forwards were slick and smart, the Ibrox boys were woefully weak at wing-half, where McKinnon and Stevenson had an unhappy 90 minutes. String shooting Alex Scott was the star of this Rangers’ side. He started a few weeks ago as an emergency centre . . . but now he’s got defences waving emergency signals. The Clyde ling-pins were inside-right George Herd and right-half Dan Currie. Powerhouse Currie, he was moved to the half back only a few weeks ago pounded all over Ibrox to get his forwards going. And they had jaunty Jim McLean to finish off their moves. Only around 10,000 Rangers smallest crowd of the season saw them score first, thanks to a Scott miskick. Alex tried to set the ball up for a shot but he miss-kicked and the ball rolled to George McLean who slammed it into the net. But a minute later a boob by right-half Ron McKinnon let Clyde’s McLean head the equaliser. And in 27 minutes Rangers’ defence were caught flat-footed again when a cross by Willie McCulloch was neatly headed home by McLean. Rangers’ fans were stunned six minutes later when Clyde scored again with a great piece of soccer. BOBBY STEEL WAS THE BOY WHO DID THE DAMAGE WITH A BRILLIANT HEADER FOR A GEORGE HERD CROSS. Just before half-time Penman put Scott through and Alex sent a low savage shot raging past McCulloch. It took Rangers till 17 minutes from time to snatch the equaliser, George McLean scored, although only minutes before the fans booed him for missing a great chance. BUT RANGERS RELIEF LASTED ONLY THREE MINUTES. YES THAT MAN JIM McLEAN. Niven couldn’t hold his shot and it rolled into the net. Five minutes from time John Colrain was booked by the referee. He had already been warned after an incident with a linesman.
