Jimmy McGrory Benefit Match - In many respects the benefit match for Jimmy McGrory at Parkhead proved disappointing. Rangers, true had some satisfaction from the score. Celtic had much to deplore on account of the execrable shooting. And the man for whom the benefit was arranged must have been disappointed at the smallness of the crowd. It was estimated at between 7000 and 8000. Though the stars or some of them- were in the grandstand, yet I found a study of the many young lads intensely interesting. Thrilling would have been the right word to apply when Kinnear sped ahead and shot hard from a narrow angle. Even more thrilling were another Kinnear drive and a characteristic Kennaway saving drive. Not so dangerous but invitingly clever were some of the Celts forwards moves. Buchan and Deaney developed a method of passing Cheyne. That method left the winger free. Dawson had twice to save from the right-wing pair. The outfield success of the Celtic right-wing pair caused me to keep an eye on the lad behind them Clancy. Took the ball down with sole of his foot occasionally. Then travelled past his man before parting. Neat work, and distinctly promising. I longed for more of the open style of the Parkhead boys. That style enabled Dunn to startle Dawson. A clen run through then groans! Dunn for his foot under the ball and shot over. A glorious chance missed. For a minute or so at times I had a chance to study young Fiddes at inside-right just about the best forward on the field. From one of his passes Kinnear took a chance. His terrific drive must have hurt Kennaway. A Main shot, that the Celtic keeper cleared, fell to Gillick, who smacked hard to the underside of the net. Quite a good goal! Might have been another for the centre a minute after but for a opportune dive by Kennaway. Even more brilliant was a Dawson dive when Dunn, close in, toed the ball seemingly beyond the keepers reach and low. That incident alone was well worth seeing. And still another great save distinguished Dawson as the personality of the match. Mains near run-in goal, close on the interval, put Rangers in a pretty comfortable position. Napier, who had been injured a minute later, went to outside-left after the restart. Rangers kept to more open tactics, a scheme that allowed them to conserve their energy and yet kept Hogg, McStay and Morrison on the stretch. With a dozen reasonable chances, Celts forwards failed. The game distinctly fizzled. Then Fiddes and Kinnear robbed the match of any remaining interest by scoring two fine goals from almost impossible bye-line positions. Kinnears shot was positively brilliant.
