Match Trivia

North American Tour - Following on a magnificent exhibition of concerted team-play Glasgow Rangers handed out a thorough trimming to the Calgary All-Stars at Hillhurst Park Wednesday evening by eight goals to one. The display of the visiting club was without parallel in the history of local football, and while the local players strove manfully to stem the almost automatic tide of goal scoring, their supreme individual effort was almost helpless. Stobie, the Calgary goalkeeper, did his part well. Stewart at full-back, lived up to his reputation as a powerful representative player, and Stephen kicked and tackled in his accustomed style. At half-back the locals had a tremendous task to confront and each one of the three did as well as might have been expected. The attack did not have a chance. Foster distributed the play cleverly, and Blair showed clever individual effort. The goal-scorers were: Rangers – Brown 2, Marshall 3, Craig 1, Archibald 1, Fleming 1. Calgary – Blair 1. Calgary lost the toss and was forced to play against the sun and wind. Stobie conceded a corner in the first minute when Fleming shot. Stobie stopped Nicholson’s perfectly-placed flag kick, but Calgary could not progress beyond the centre line. Fleming kicked past from Archibald. McDonald gave an object lesson in throwing when he tossed the ball without the slightest hesitancy almost near the centre of the field. Meiklejohn hit the bar after worming his way through, the resultant corner being put behind by Nicholson. The light blues hemmed the local boy’s in, and George Brown within five minutes of the start shot an unsaveable goal which rebounded into the net from the under side of the cross bar. Cartwright was the instigator of the first Calgary attack when he robbed Archibald to send Foster away, the Calgary centre sending well out to Mathieson, whose parting effort was cleared by Hamilton. The position play of the Rangers was remarkable, and so far, they had the local guessing. Meiklejohn was living up to his reputation as a trier, and his pots at goal kept Stobie on the qui vive. Stobie handled with confidence, as the Rangers confined the locals within their own territory, and Stewart and Stephen were defending stoutly, the former in particular, punting with rare confidence. After Foster had shot past, Blair took a ball in his stride to score a remarkable goal which Hamilton made a supreme effort to save but was unable to reach. Thus, at the end of ten minutes Calgary had levelled the score. Within two minutes Brown took a pass from Fleming to shoot into the low left-hand corner to leave Stobie without a chance, and to put the Rangers again in the lead. The footwork of the visitors was bewitching, as they passed from player to player. Meiklejohn tipped over the bar in the course of a heavy bombardment by the Glasgow forwards. Stobie saved from Archibald who drove a hard right-foot grounder from Brown. The Rangers defensive scheme was perfect, and the efforts of Akenclose, Foster and Mathison were without avail. Stobie saved with the confidence of a veteran as Calgary battled against a difficult sun. Grey shouldered Marsden off in the approved style when Foster had sent a fine pass to the left. Brown missed by inches after Archibald had wriggled his way through to place him in a scoring position. The combined work of the visitors continued. Foater was showing a clever appreciation of the centre forwards berth, and his fine swings to the wing were a feature of the locals’ play. Stephen foiled Marshall as the latter was set for a shot at the local keeper. Stewart completing the clearance with a rousing punt. Craig started a venture which proved successful when he drove from the 18-yard line to beat Stobie with a ball which entered the net with the assistance of Sandy Pate. This gave the rangers a 3-1 lead. Stobie saved in fine fashion when he conceded a corner from Fleming’s point-black shot. Marsden forced Gray to concede the first Calgary corner, and Gibb shot over as the half-time whistle went. The Rangers faced a low sun when the second half opened, but they began where they left off, going straight for the Calgary goal. Within three minutes Marshall drove a stinging grounder past Stobie, the progress of which the keeper made a valiant effort to save, the ball glancing from Stobie’s outstretched form into the net. Hamilton gave away a corner when Marsden crossed, but the flag kick was cleared in the easiest fashion. Rangers forced a corner through Nicholson, Stobie fisting over for another flag kick on the opposite wing. Blair was setting the pace in the Calgary front rank, but his heroic effort were cleverly countered. Marshall forced his way through to shoot hard and true beyond Stobie, making it 5-1 for the Glasgow team. Rangers gave a magnificent display of midfield combination, seldom allowing the Calgary boys to get in touch with the ball. Foster found himself in possession with only Gray and Hamilton ahead, but the Rangers back covered sufficiently to put the local pivot off his shot, and Hamilton was relieved to find the rebound from Foster’s second attempt hit the post. An Akenclose wing to the wing was offset by Hamilton who tackled Mathieson effectively. Archibald came into possession with ten minutes of the end and ran through in the simplest fashion to make the score 6-1. Archibald forced a corner off Cartwright, Marshall heading past by the closet margin. Gibb, Akenclose and Mathieson staged the cleverest triangular movement made by the local boys this period, the extreme man sending over to Marsden who sent narrowly past. Marshall lying behind took a drop shot with deliberate aim to make the count 7-1 in favour of the visitors. A few minutes later the Rangers notched another, Fleming heading through from Archibald’s perfect pass. One of the best efforts of the game came from Stobie, the local goalie, who saved in spectacular fashion from Nicholson, when the left-winger was clean through on is own. Rangers received a cordial welcome to Calgary. Before the game with Calgary United ex-Bailie Graham was presented with a beautiful Caledonia Society with a beautiful bug Buffalo head, and at the finish of the match the tourists were entertained to a banquet and dance. Some nice things were said by out hosts and we were made to feel very much at home. Indeed, everyone has been so kind and hospitable in Canada that we feel we owe a great debt to out warm-hearted kinsmen. Our boys enjoyed the dance immensely. They found no lack of partners. There was another pleasant surprise doe ex-Bailie Graham, Manager Struth and the players, who were each presented by Mr A MacGregor of Edmonton, with a scarf pin made from gold found in the local river. We have met a great many Scots who were glad to hear all we could tell them of the home country. We got a great send-off to Chicago after the festivities, and we did not forget to answer with a right good Scottish cheer. The match was well contested in the first half, and at the interval Rangers led by only 2-1. Experience and stamina told in the second half. Blair scored Calgary’s goal in the first half, and Rangers’ scorers were Marshall (3), Brown (2), and Archibald, Craig and Fleming one each. Everybody fit and well
