Match Trivia

James Walls Benefit Match. Newcastle United were desperately unlucky not to share the honours with Rangers in the ‘Fister’ Walls benefit match, which attracted 4000 people to Ibrox. In the first half when Rangers got the only goal, ‘the Geordies’ were the most dangerous side. There was purpose in everything they did, but their shooting. MacDonald was the only man with a shot in his locker. Rangers took a long time to get anything like stetted down, and even when they did have a look in, their work was spasmodic. The Newcastle half-backs, Gibson especially, were most assiduous in their feeding of the men in front was a treat to behold. Rangers might well have been three goals down in the first half hour. Two shots from MacDonald and one from Cowan looked winners all the way, but Hamilton was unbeatable. After thirty minutes play – and quite against the run of thing – Meiklejohn put forward a nice one to Henderson, who simply had to trundle the ball past Bradley. We saw an evener contest in the second half. The Rangers’ attack improved, and Alan Morton and George Henderson had good shots at Bradley. Then Newcastle threw away two glorious chances of equalising. Cowan headed into Hamilton’s arms, and Low, standing unchallenged, passed the ball back to Currie. Of the Newcastle side MacDonald, the ex-Ranger, impressed me most. Low, as versatile as ever, led McCandless a merry dance. Gibson was the best of the middlemen, his placing being most accurate. Henderson was the outstanding Ibrox forward, behind McCandless and Meiklejohn added to their laurels. Neither Cairns nor Cunningham did anything noteworthy
