Match Trivia

Belgian War Relief Fund Shield. Never perhaps in the history of the Morton club did they gain a more deserved victory than at Firhill last night, when they won the War Fund Shield by beating Rangers by two goals to one. They seemed primed up for the occasion, whereas several of the Ibrox men played football that had a fag end smack about it. There was not a great deal of combination along either front. The pace set was too hard for that; instead, we were regaled with flashes of clever work on all four wings, and a lot of hard kicking and quick following up. Sometimes, indeed, the exchanges were so keen that nasty little incidents occurred which one does not look for in first class circled. But the crowd seemed to thoroughly enjoy, the fare provided, and charity covereth a multitude of sins. From this series of matches the War Funs will benefit by something like £950 – last night’s ‘gate’ totalled £40 all in. Morton opened the scoring midway through the first half. A moment before this came about Bradford had extricated himself from a tight corner. The play was transferred to the other end in double quick time, and McLaughlin, following on, sent the ball home just inside an upright, Lock having failed to properly get hold pf an earlier shot. Thus matters stood till the second portion had been ten minutes in progress, when Seymour get the better of Craig in a tackle, and shot a fine oblique ball into the net. Morton looked like adding to their score at the time, nut although they made several praiseworthy attempts Lock could not again be beaten. During the last ten Minutes the Rangers, made great efforts to retrieve themselves but a goal by Bennett was all they could manage. Like McLaughlin’s opening score, Bennett succeeded through following on. A miskick by Wright was bungled by Bradford, and the Ibrox centre, using his ‘weight,’ the ball tolled slowly into the net. I have never seen Braford play a better game than this one. Nothing hardly came amiss to the Morton goalkeeper. Ferrier and Ormond hit out at everything and invariably got it. Both backs kicked many good balls, while their tackling was safe and keen. As usual James Stark was the better half-back. There was method in everything the veteran did. Wright was his own real self, and McLean was little behind either of his partners. Forward, the palm was borne away by Seymour, who touched a very high standard. He was the most cultured player afield. Gourlay shone in making openings for his fellows, and the speedy Torrance got across a few good balls. McLaughlin seldom shaped like a centre, but he stuck in and had his reward. Lock, I thought, might have saved the first goal scored against the Rangers, but otherwise he did all right. Craig and Muir were fairly good backs, but Gordon – and he was not quite himself – was the one half-back who compared favourably with any of the Morton trio. Pursell parted with the ball badly, and Bowie after half an hour or so faded out of the picture almost. In a scaggy attack line, Cairns, Scot-Duncan, and latterly Bennett, shone to most advantage. Cunningham never got settled, and Paterson, although pretty enough now and then, was seldom effective
