Match Trivia
Scandinavian Tour. The match v Orgryte Idrott Sallskap took place in the evening at 7.30. We found a very well-equipped ground, stand with seats for 1,200, good team rooms, hot and cold baths, and sprays &c. The game started punctually, and we found that this was a different lot from Christiania. The home centre broke away and almost scored. Waddell at left back was shaping very well, and Law, who is now playing like his old self, shook off the attack, and after a short scrimmage at the other goal, Gordon scored with a hard drive. The Swedes now put some force into their play, and as they have a playful habit of using their hands, our boys were knocked off their balance for a little. Some hard knocks were given, and for a short time we were doing all the taking. From a good centre by the right wing the Swedish inside left scored, and then the game started in earnest, the home team to keep what they had, and our fellows to show that we come from the home of football. Bennett and Smith, ably assisted by Hendry took up the running, and from a centre by Smith Hogg headed into the net. Shortly after Reid scored a third goal. The Swedes were playing a very forcible game, and the referee (Mr Charles Bunyan), who acts as coach here, gave little attention to the many claims for fouls made by the Scottish team. Several corners fell to our team, but though all nicely placed, no scoring took place. Hogg had hard lines with a beautiful drive, and a few minutes from half-time Reid accepted a pass up the centre and scored a goal in his usual style. The ‘Light Blues’ were first out and started again in a determined manner. No scoring took place for twenty minutes, the home team putting up a splendid defence, particularly the left back. The right back, however, after being completely beaten by Bennett, retaliated by following up and tripping him six yards from goal. The penalty was not well received by the spectators, however. That did not prevent Bennett from scoring. After this the crowd got something to shout about, as the home forwards came away in great style, and Waddell being beaten by the ball on the rough ground, the outside right scored a good goal. The next incident was another penalty. Bennett was again tripped up. The goalkeeper left his goal, and no amount of persuasion would make him take up his position between the sticks again. However, the captain took his place. Bennett again scored, and the goalkeeper resumed his duties. This finished the scoring Rangers 7 Orgryte Idrott 2. The left back and outside right of the Swedish team are fit for any First League team, and the team all over gave a very good display. They are very fast on the ball, shoot on every occasion they get a chance, but are inclined to play the man more than the ball. The Rangers all pled a nice game. Law and Waddell gave a very taking display at back. Goal-scorers – Reid 2; Bennett 2; Gordon, Smith and Hogg.
