Match Trivia
The treat of the season at Dumfries was reserved for the last day and the football public of ‘The Queen of the South’ marked their appreciation of the Rangers’ visit by turning out in record numbers. The ‘Light Blues’ got an enthusiastic welcome, and in return they gave one of the finest expositions of the game seen in Dumfries for several years. The League winners turned up in full strength with the exception of Richmond and Bowie – the latter suffering from injuries – and their placed were taken by Craig and Dunn. The Rangers at once took the game in hand, and after some very pretty passing – in spite of the sloppy condition of the field – Smith lowered Gallacher’s colours with a fast, long ground shot. This was ten minutes from the start, And Dunn, taking advantage of a fine pass from Smith on the left, soon followed up with a second. The Borderers were entirely over-shadowed by their brilliant opponents, but in spite of this they made a plucky and even creditable show. Law and Potter moved well together on the left, and the latter tested Lock with a fast shot, the custodian saving easily. In the second half the visitors easily maintained their superiority, and Bennett added another point somewhat easily. The local men, however, had some of the play, and Law, after a fast run shot for goal. Lock ran out, and fumbling the ball, Blair quickly slipped in and scored. For the remainder of the match, the Rangers kept the game well in hand, and there was a good deal of clever individual work. Galt and Hogg now bulked largely in he game, and the latter was evidently bent on scoring – shot after shot from his foot was cleverly saved by Gallacher, but at length Hogg found the net. The Borderes put up a plucky defence to the last, and they had no reason to be ashamed of their 6-1 defeat by such clever exponents of the game
