Match Trivia
At Grosvenor Park Belfast, yesterday afternoon, Glasgow Rangers had a hollow victory over a ‘United Belfast’ team, the fixture, which was patronised by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, being in aid of the municipal milk fund for poor children. The Rangers had matters practically their own way in the first half, the Belfast forwards being unable to make headway against a fine defence, in which Chapman was a very prominent figure. The centre half scored with a fast grounder after twenty minutes’ play and later Parker from a swinging centre by A Brown added a second. With the breeze the Belfast men had a better share of the play in the last half, but Lock was found little employment, Chapman and the backs covering up well. Near the end Hogg, who was giving the home defence a terrible gruelling all through, scored the finest goal ever witness by a Belfast crowd. From a centre by A Brown he received the ball four yards from goal, and from a wonderful shot the ball passes right along the bottom of the cross-bar, caught the furthest upright, and rebounded through. He received a well-deserved ovation from a crowd who seldom cheer opponents. The Belfast side were practically outpointed throughout, the combination of the Rangers’ forwards being especially fine. The receipts totalled over £100. At the conclusion the Lady Mayoress presented the winners with gold scarf pins, and thanked the Rangers directorate for their kindness in assisting. Mr W Crichton, in reply, said when the Lady Mayoress’s letter was received they at once decided unanimously to send a team to Belfast, and would only be too pleased to assist at any time
