Match Trivia
This match, which was for the benefit of Alex Smith the Rangers outside left, who had been 14 years with the club, was played last night on Ibrox Park. The weather was fine and the spectators numbered about 8000. Rangers kicked off, and the first to come to prominence were McPherson and Murray both making good efforts, which Wilkinson cleared. From a nice pass by Muirhead, Gordon got away on the right and sent in a shot, which Rennie caught well. In the play that followed the Rangers front rank showed nice combination and Wilkinson was kept busy. Rangers continued to press and 15 minutes from the start, Smith from a pass by McPherson scored a fine goal. For the next ten minutes the game was all in favour of the home lot, everyone of their front rank having a try at Wilkinson the Queen’s goalkeeper saving several hard shots in the cleverest manner. However the test was too severe and it was no surprise when Murray got a second goal, Wilkinson having no chance of saving. So active was the attack of the Rangers halves and forwards that the Queen’s seldom got near Rennie, and any danger that threatened was easily cleared by Sharp and Craig. McColl, Gordon and Paul made one or two good effort to get off, but there was a want of combination among the amateurs, and any chance they got was spoiled. Towards the interval McPherson scored a third point for Rangers, and at the interval the home team led by three goals to nothing. A minute after the restart Queen’s were awarded a foul, bit nothing came of it, and a minute later Wilkinson was again beaten, Murray scoring from a nice pass by McDonald. The Queen’s front rank got little support from the halves, while the backs were none too steady, the result being that Rangers were never far from Wilkinson, who saved repeatedly, his play being the best feature of the game from a Queen’s point of view. To the end Rangers always held the upper hand, the Queen’s seldom if ever getting beyond midfield. Throughout Rangers played a fine game. Rennie got little to do, the backs were always safe, the halves, while the forwards were all good they combination being very effective. For the Queen’s Wilkinson was easily the best, the backs and halves never gave confidence, while in the front rank Gordon, McColl and Paul were the only men who did anything of note. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Queen’s Park nothing
