Match Trivia
The football season in connection with the Manchester City club, who have rejoined the premier division of the League, was opened last evening at Hyde Road a match having been arranged with the Glasgow Rangers, the Scottish Cup holders and ex-League champions. Fine weather was experienced, and about 8,000 people were present. The City team included several new men. Play against the wind, the visitors pressed for a time, and McMahon cleverly jumped across and cleared from the toes of Speedie, who at six yards’ rangers seemed certain to score. Needless to say, the ex-Preston North End full back was heartily cheered for his effort. An attack by the City proved productive, a shot at a fairly long range deceiving Dickie. Who the scored was it was difficult to tell, but the ball seemed to come in from one of the halves. The home right wing, constituted of Meredith and Livingstone, combined nicely, and the ex-Liverpool player was extremely dangerous whenever he got well placed. Twice he tested the Rangers keeper with teasing ground shots. Which were somewhat difficult to get rid of. Occasionally the Glasgow men forced the play to the other end, where once Speedie sent in at terrific speed. Hillman knocked the ball out grandly. Booth the City outside left, shaped well, and twice he ran close in with the ball and called upon Dickie to fist away. At halftime Manchester City led by a goal to nothing. On resuming the, Rangers flattered by at once rushing up, but Walker‘s shot was several yards wide. The venue of hostilities was then removed to the opposite end, where Meredith sent in a brilliant centre, which Moffat screwed in with his head, the ball going to Dickie who saved by throwing away. Soon afterwards from a pass by Speedie, Mackie equalised grandly for the Rangers. As regards the home halves, Hynds worked diligently at the centre, but Lyons on the left was rather over-shadowed by Fraser. Ashworth was fairly resourceful, but taking the trio as a whole, their combination was not over powerful. This state of things was more conspicuous in the second half, when the men seemed to tire in their work. On the other hand, the Glasgow team proved that they were imbued with plenty of stamina; and so they should be, for they have been in active play over a month. It was only in the latter connection where the City were defective, and when the season is more advanced they will no doubt, like other League teams, feel the benefit of practice, and fully answer the expectations of their supporters. The forward line, in which the shining star was undoubtedly Meredith, created a most favourable impression. The Welshman retains his old speed, and his centres were both well timed and exceedingly accurate. He had a partner in Livingstone who knows how to shoot. Moffat, who played centre forward, was somewhat clumsy in his movements, but he may improve with time. Booth and Turnbull, on the other wing, did useful work, and Hynds and Moffat, everybody was glad to see, fed them pretty equally with the crack men. The defence was pretty sound, McMahon at full back and Hillman in goal giving great satisfactions. The last quarter of an hour of the game went mainly in favour of the visitors, for whom Mackie failed to score with an open goal before him. Result – Manchester City 1: Glasgow Rangers 1
