Match Trivia
Jock Drummond Benefit Match. At Ibrox ark last night these teams met in a friendly match, the proceeds of which were for the benefit of John Drummond the Rangers back. The weather was good, but the crowd did not realise expectations, and at the start only some 4000 spectators were present. Celtic kicked off, and the game early indication of being contested in not too earnest a spirit. Play was however interesting, and the equality of the teams was evidenced in the result of one goal each. Rangers who won the toss were the first to score, an initial advantage largely due to A Smith, whose centre saved by McArthur was ultimately banged onto the net by Hamilton. At the other end the game was almost equalised, but Dickie was successful in clearing shots from Campbell and McCafferty. Some time later the Celtic centre received a great pass from Crawford, who had beaten the back, but he kicked past. A Smith was equally unsuccessful in front of McArthur, and a minute later Campbell who was certainly not taking the game seriously, but another opportunity. Haltime came with the Rangers leading by 1 goal to 0. On resuming MacDonald broke away and ran the length of the field. He finished well by crossing the ball, but there wan no Ranger up to take advantage of the pass. Three corners came to the Celts in quick successions, but the Light Blue defence had little difficulty in clearing the ball. The Ibrox team took up the running, and A Smith finished with a lovely shot at goal. The game continued to be fought out on fast lines. In another raid on Dickie’s goal, Campbell was tripped within the penalty lines. The Parkhead centre took the kick, and had no difficulty in beating Dickie. In semi-darkness play went on, and the Celtic had if there was any differences, the better of matters, but the Rangers defence was sound. Ten minutes from time Loney was hurt, and the Celtic finished the game with only ten men. For the Rangers Fraser, MacDonald, Lennie, A Smith and Gibson were best, equally the Celtic were well severed by McLeod, Marshall and Loney. Result – Rangers 1: Celtic 1
