Match Trivia
Ibrox Disaster Benefit Match. These teams met at Hampden Park last night on the tournament for the benefit of the Ibrox club. There was about 4000 spectators, the weather was excellent. Celtic won the toss and facing a strong breeze, Hamilton kicked off for the Rangers. Immediately the Ibrox forwards were down on McPherson and the ball after bobbing about in front of the custodian was slipped past by Hamilton. This early reverse had no effect on the play of the Parkhead eleven, and within ten minutes they had scored four goals. Hamilton the outside left was responsible for the opening goal, and Quinn and Campbell were equally successful. The fourth point came from a corner, and the beautifully placed ball was scrimmaged through. Rangers played hard to reduce the leeway, and the play in front rank increased greatly, but Watson and McLeod had little difficulty in dealing with the attacks. Halftime – Celtic 4 goals: Rangers 1. Nine minutes had gone of the second half when Celtic made their score five, Quinn was responsible for the point, and his shot completely beat Dickie. A brief spell of attacking by the Light Blues forwards varied the game, but the Ibrox quintet never seemed to be concerted in their movements. Success however crowned their efforts. A grand centre by Smith was cleverly played by Walker, who headed past McPherson. Heartened by the goal the Rangers attack became more aggressive, and only cool work by the Celtic defence staved of the attack. Frequency characterised the work of the Rangers, and at this time certainly deserved to increase their score. Celtic however maintained the advantage, and Quinn added a sixth goal; while close on time Campbell scored a seventh. Result – Celtic 7 goals: Rangers 2
