Match Trivia

These teams met yesterday morning at the Oval, in lovely weather. Notwithstanding the Rangers’ pronounced victory on Tuesday, the attendance was fairly good. The United team was reinforced by Mercer Linfield), McIlvenny (Ulster) and Darling (Linfield). There was very little wind, and it was fifteen minutes after the advertised time when the teams got to work, and Rangers, winning the toss, attacked the city goal. They were first to become dangerous, and got a corner early, McDougall forcing it off McMaster, and Speedie made a good effort to score, the ball passing outside the posts. There was very little excitement about the opening, but Mercer caused a little by a good run up the right, but was beaten. The ball, however, came over to the left, and Waddell had a chance, but his parting shot caught the side of the net, and it was a tame one at any rate. Still, from a free kick United were very dangerous, and McIlvenny made a splendid effort to score. So far the game was not quite so one sided as it was yesterday, and the play was better distributed. Rangers naturally showed to most advantage in play, but McIlvenny rushing away once, parted well to Mercer, and the ball coming to Waddell, he shot strongly, and McPherson gave a corner. From this the ball was splendidly put in, and McPherson barely saved on the line from Mercer, and he seemed beaten at the time, but luckily saved. Again play veered towards the Rangers’ end, and Young, in stopping Waddell, gave a corner, which was cleared. A dangerous bit of passing looked like bringing a goal, for the visitors, but after all the forwards taking part, Wood got off-side, and spoiled the opening. At the other end McKelvey centred well, and though the ball was cleared, it came to McIlvenny, who McPherson, and scored first goal amidst loud cheering from the spectators. It was a cleverly taken point. After this reverse Rangers played better, and Hamilton tried to steal in, but was blocked by McAreavey, who cleared well. The United were having the best of matters and forced the game well, buy Young and Crawford played strongly, and prevented any danger. While following a run down Gibson had a shot on his own account, but it went wide, but one from Mercer a minute later brought a corner of McPherson, which went behind. Lewis had to save twice from Wood and Hamilton, but he did this cleverly. Fine work by Mercer was spoiled by Waddell, who in good position shot behind. A minute later the latter fouled Gibson, but Wattie and McMaster headed clear. At half-time Glentoran United 1 goal; Rangers nil. The second half was resumed at 12:37. Before the match, and at the interval, the band of the locked-out musicians played a fine selection of music, which was much appreciated. Rangers got away right from the kick-off, and a fast shot from McDougall was cleared by Lewis. The rangers were working hard for a goal, and for a good while the United back division had its work cut out to save onslaughts, Lewis having to clear a beautiful shot from Hamilton. A curious incident happened in a rush on the Rangers’ post. Waddell put in a shot, which hit the back of the net and came into play again. McIlvenny ran in and kicked through, bit no goal was allowed. It was a narrow escape for the Rangers. Mercer went right-half, and Darling outside-right, and for a while United held a large share of the play. Rangers were, all the same, doing their best to draw level, but although Campbell had a good chance he shot over, while similarly placed McDougall was give off-side. Darling and Smith were playing well to each other, and more than once the visitors’ goal was in jeopardy, but it was well covered by Young and Crawford, while McPherson dealt with any stray shots which were coming his way. The game was very mild, and varied by an odd run on either side without any result. A splendid run between McIlvenny, McKelvey and Waddell led to a corner, but this was cleared. Mercer and Darling changed back again to their original positions, and the former sent in a splendid centre, which McPherson caught and cleared. A sole run of Hamilton was only stopped on the line, and then at the expense of a corner, which was cleared with difficulty. Mercer and Millar both had chances, but the shots were cleared by Young and Morton, while a free for hands well placed by Darling was headed behind by McKelvey. The play of the Rangers was the reverse of yesterday, and though they strove hard to equalise they were never really dangerous. They played pretty football, but, on the other hand, that by the United was quite as noticeable. Lewis, with a grand effort, git his hands on a straight drive from Hamilton, and gave a corner, which was put past. The Rangers made several great efforts to obtain at least the equaliser. McIlvenny, had he not been so selfish when inside the twelve yards’ line, ought to have had another goal for the United, but he was robbed. McMaster had a long shot at goal, which McMaster had a long shot at goal, which McPherson coolly cleared. There were still ten minutes left for a score on either side. McIlvenny, however, managed it just on time. Results; Glentoran United 2 goals; Rangers nil
