Match Trivia
James Madden Benefit Match. A friendly match between these clubs for the benefit of J Madden was played last night on Celtic Park. Madden began his football career in the Dumbarton Albion in 1884-85. He afterwards played for Dumbarton Hibs, joining Dumbarton shortly after. When the Celtic was formed in 1888 Madden, along with Kelly of Renton gave them a hand, and played in several of the first matches on old Celtic Park. He has three International caps against England from the Scottish League two against Wales, and one (League) against Ireland. The Celtic kicked off before about 10,000 spectators. The game had hardly been started when the Rangers were down on McArthur, but Doyle relieved. Five minutes after the start however, the Ibrox forwards came away in a body, and as a result of some pretty passing Hamilton scored. Immediately afterwards Miller sent in a terrific shot which McArthur saved. The Rangers were having so far the best of the play, and McArthur was kept very busy defending, and it was lucky for the Celtic that he was in form. From a foul against Celtic Hyslop, with a low swift shot, added a second goal. The ball had hardly been set in motion when the Rangers forwards again got away, and Hamilton when in front of goal, put the ball past McArthur. Offside was however appealed and given. The Celtic were being completely outplayed, and their forwards appeared to be disorganised. Hamilton again, after a brilliant piece of play, scored a third goal which McArthur had no chance of saving. Halftime was called with the Rangers leading by three goals to nothing. On the restart play for a time was very even, Henderson and King essayed a run, but Crawford intercepted them, and Hyslop getting the ball brought it well up. Smith however, sent it high over the bar. About 15 minutes from the finish Russell scored the first goal for the Celtic when about 40 yards out. This had a good effect on the play, and from this to the finish the game was of the keenest description. Both sides tried hard to score, and Dickie and McArthur had some stiff shots to deal with. There was no further scoring, and a good game ended in favour of the Rangers by 3 goals to 1. Rangers thoroughly deserved their victory the whole of their team playing capitally. In the first half they held the Celts at every point, and the passing and combination of their forwards division was perfect. The Celtic defence was hardly u to the usual, while the forwards did not combine so well as in their former matches this seasons.
