Match Trivia

Yesterday the famous Glasgow Rangers, who at present stand on equality with Dumbarton at the head of the Scottish League competition, paid a visit to Olive Grove to lay a game with Sheffield Wednesday. Local interest in football, however seems to be declining with the approach of the end of the season, and in spite of fine weather only about 2000 spectators assembled. Both teams entered the field with defeats written against them in their previous engagements, the Rangers having been beaten on Saturday by Notts Forest by 3 goals to 0, and Wednesday having gone down before Derby County by 5 to 1. The Glasgow men, who were without their usual goalkeeper, Reid, at Nottingham, had his assistance yesterday, whilst Wednesday played Crawley and H Brandon instead of Richardson and HE Bennett, who performed at Derby The Scotchmen winning the toss had the advantage of a slight breeze during the first half of the game, and at 3.55 Gibson of Wednesday, kicked off towards Sheffield. At once the Rangers threatened the home goal, and succeeded in reducing it within three minutes of the start, a long shot from Hislop sending the ball through the corner, Smith failing to stop it, as Wilson made a rush for him. The Sheffielders then had a turn, gaining a free kick for ‘hands’ close in and also a corner, which however, they failed to utilise because of the sturdy defence of their opponents. The Rangers were a heavier and stronger lot of layers than the home team, and subsequent play was very much in their favour. The passing of their forwards was not particularly brilliant, but they played a strong vigorous game, giving Smith, the Wednesday goalkeeper, some hot shots to stop. Two from McPherson and one from McIntyre were especially dangerous, whilst Henderson struck the post, and Muir the crossbar. However the Wednesday defence was good, Mumford, H Brandon and Betts excelling, whilst occasionally the front ranks essayed to get away. They were generally stopped though by clever tackling or ponderous return by Gow, who played splendid game at back from start to finish. On one occasion the Wednesday men got very dangerous, Woolhouse and Gibson each shooting, but Gow cleared twice, and a subsequent corner came to nothing. More pressure by the Rangers followed, but Smith kept his goal well. Then Wednesday made a dashing attack, but Reid saved well from Gibson, and Danger was cleared from a subsequent scrimmage. Just before halftime the Rangers attacked by the left wing, Wednesday appealed for something, and made no effort to stop McPherson, whose shot Smith let go through. The Sheffielders claim was not granted, the goal being allowed, and a crossover being made with the Rangers leafing by 2 to 0 Scarcely had play been resumed when the Scotchmen further increased their lead, Hislop running down and scoring immediately. Still the visitors pressed, and the game looked as good as lost for the Wednesday men. Now however came a change Woolhouse and Cawley began to make some smart runs on the home left wing, and eleven minutes from the change of ends the latter made Reid save, and the ball coming back from a scrimmage close in, was pounced by Gibson, who banged it through. This success seemed to put new life into the Sheffielders, who from this point to the end of the game showed vastly better from than they had done in the first half. Although the Rangers were at times dangerous, the home side had now better of the play, and 22 minutes from the cross-over Woolhouse, from a pass by Gibson, shot a second goal amidst loud applause. Still playing up with dash and vigour, Wednesday tried hard to equalise, and 5 minutes from the end they succeeded, a fast long shot by H Brandon from the extreme right sending the ball against one of the uprights, and thence through the goal. After this some fast and even play was seen, each side trying hard to gain the winning point. Play was chiefly in the visitors quarters, but the Scotch front rank kept breaking away in dangerous style. Once Smith was nearly beaten, a splendid long shot causing him much trouble and only being got rid of at a second attempt. Just before the end Wednesday made some dangerous rushes, Gemmell making a hot shot, but the Rangers defence was superb, and a free kick for ‘hands’ near in also failing to break it down, the game ending – Wednesday 3 goals: Glasgow Rangers 3 goals
