Match Trivia

This return fixture was played this afternoon on the Town Ground, Arkwright Street, Nottingham and was witnessed by about 4,000 spectators. The visitors won the toss, and played with the wind towards the Wilford goal. They started well, and Brown had to handle from J Gow in the first minute. Some smart right and centre play enabled the Forest to get to the other end, where McCallum centred, and McKenzie had to clear from Higgins and Russell, the second at the expense of a corner. This was cleared, and play opened out a bit. A nice run by Henderson and Hislop enabled the latter to centre, and Brown gave a corner in clearing. This was placed wide and easily cleared. Still play was really in favour of the visitors, but the Reds soon got away, after some good passing by Russell and Higgins, Shaw centred, and Russell shot straight trough, but McKenzie kicked away. The ball was not got far away, however and McCallum and Tich were now dangerous, although Gow Spoiled the latter’s shot, and the Reds had to fall back and defend their own position for some time. A sudden burst away by Higgins put the Reds within shooting range again, but Hodge repulsed them twice, and at the other end Hislop shot over the bar. Kerr showed some very tricky play, which caused the Forest a lot of trouble, J Gow shooting straight at Brown, who got the ball away. Their next attempt was by Hislop, Brown again clearing, and J Gow shot over. In the meantime the Reds had been doing nothing but defend. The forwards, however got away from the goal kick and forced a corner, but it was quickly cleared, and the Rangers got down to the other goal once more, where they exercised pressure for some time. Higgins and McCallum got away from a clever pass by Tich Smith, and McCallum attempted to screw in close off the line, but failed, and after another attack, in which the offside rule was enforced, the visitors retaliated, but they could not keep their place, as the Reds dashed away, and after a fine shot by McKenzie had been beaten out Tich Smith shot wide. From another passing run Higgins put in a beautiful screw, which was only a few inches wide of the mark. From a free kick to the Forest Thompson placed well into goal, but Tich Smith headed the wrong way, but Thompson got the ball from the return, and shot straight, and McKenzie kicked away. Play was still in favour of the Forest, and after 35 minutes play, Russell scored the first goal with a long shot. The play still ruled in favour of the Forest, who made a couple of dangerous rushes before the Rangers front ranks got off, and the left wing were afforded a nice chance, but J Gow kicked wide. The ground they had made however they still kept for a minute or two without getting a shot in, Scott working hard to keep them out. From a throw in Shaw got possession, and eluding Hodge, gave to Higgins who shot straight. McKenzie was not beaten. Then came a shot from the halfback division, which the Scotch custodian dealt with, and directly after he stopped a beauty from Tich Smith. A fine dash by McCallum placed the Forest in position once more, but McKenzie cleared McCallum’s shot at the expense of a corner, and from the flag kick he dealt successfully with a try by Thompson. At the other end, from a long pass by Kerr, J Gow shot past Brown, but he was clearly offside, and the point was disallowed. The Forest at once changed the venue, and after McKenzie had cleared from Russell and Thompson, the former put in a fine sharp shot, which travelled just too high, and halftime was called with the score one goal to none in favour of the Forest. Resuming play was fast, both goals being attacked in turn, J Gow making a couple of fine runs for the Rangers, but five minutes had only elapsed before the Forest registered a second goal, Russell scoring a fine long shot after a pretty bit of finessing. McKenzie Then had to clear. Russell shot just too high, and the Forest took a corner, which was cleared, and then a long shot was put in by McCallum, the ball passed two or three players who all missed it, and it was going through when McKenzie just managed to clear. The Reds were now having considerably the best of matters, all their opponents forwards attempts to break away being frustrated, while the backs and halfbacks were hard at work defending. After a time however, the left got through, and Brown had to save from Gow at the expense of a corner. McCallum then got clean away, and tried a long shot, which went wide. The visitors attacked again, but could not hold their position, and Russell dashing down the field again, passed to Shaw, who centred, and Russell rushed in and scored a third goal, amidst great cheering. Brown had to clear from a scrimmage on the occasion of a Rangers attack, but the Reds were soon acting on the offensive again, the forwards tricking the halfbacks splendidly, and Russell had another shy at goal, but his shot went wide. For some time the visitors kept the play on the Forest goal, Gow sending in some close shots, while the backs had plenty to do. Not contest with this, the Reds broke away, and Shaw centred. Hodge gave a corner. From the flag kick he headed away, and the visitors attacked once more, and J Gow being kicked the game stopped for a bit until he had recovered. Resuming the Reds took another corner, which McCallum placed well, and Shaw headed over the bar. Albert Smith was lame, and went back, Earp taking his place at halfback. From this point until the close of the game the visitors had quite as much of the game ad the home team, who had face a strong sun. A left wing run resulted in Kerr shooting at a long distance, and Hislop attempted to head a goal, but placed the ball wide. The Reds were also several times dangerous, and Shaw shot another goal, but was standing offside at the time and the point was disallowed. No further scoring being done the Forest left the field victors by three goals to none
