Match Trivia

Taking advantage of Glasgow Autumn Holiday yesterday, the Exhibition Executive arranged an interesting match between two first-class teams, Rangers and Sunderland Albion. The kick-off was fixed at a comparatively late hour-4.15-to suit the convenience of the Edinburgh Public. The ground, after the recent rains, was in better condition than on former occasions. When the Albion trooped on to the enclosure the attendance was a long way below expectations, many of those who had witnessed the parachute descent dispersing through the Exhibition grounds. Only four of the Rangers eleven appeared at this stage (4.25), the remainder having, it seemed made a trip to the Forth Bridge, where their conveyance met with an accident. When they arrived at 4.10, some hissing from the stand testified to the annoyance of the onlookers, who would now number some 2000. Albion started play. The Rangers were soon aggressors, but the Albion backs cleared, and in a run to the Glasgow goal the English forwards proved very smart on the ball. For a period the game was very open, the men kicking strongly, if not very judiciously. A beautiful centre by Hislop landed the ball under the bar, but Roberts saved at the expense of a corner. Though beaten back the Rangers were not done with, and from a grand shot by Marshall. Followed by a header from Hislop, Roberts had his ability tested. Hislop, a minute later, missed an easy chance, but continuing the pressure Roberts rather softly gave a corner. The breeze, though light, afforded the Glasgow lads some assistance, and Roberts had several times to repel shots, though the Rangers forwards did not seem to have improved in the shooting department. At this stage pretty play was seldom shown, determined tackling and strong kicks by the backs being the feature of the play. John MacPherson sent the ball into the goal mouth, but an entrance could not be effected. A capitally played corner gave Kerr a chance which he did not neglect, and amid loud cheers the Glasgow men notched the first goal of the match. A second point scored by Wyllie was disallowed presumably on a point of off-side. The visitors’ forward play was of a disappointing nature, dashing individual work being all that was attempted. As the game progressed the Albion began to play to better purpose, and several times the Rangers had a lot of luck in keeping their goal intact. The Glasgow front rank broke away, and after showing some fair combination they got within range. Twice Roberts stopped shots, but a third from MacPherson gave the custodian no chance, a second goal was credited to the Rangers. The Albion half’s were far from strong, and could not keep the ‘light blues’ in check. As a result of some very fair wing work MacPherson was enabled to again lower Roberts’ colours, while in the succeeding play good back rather than good guidance saved the Englishmen from further disaster. Half-time score; Rangers 3 goals, Albion nil. The second half opened with a lot of pressure on the part of the Rangers, which resolved itself into four conceptive corners, of which the Rangers made no practical use. A free kick against Donald Gow gave the Albion relief, and they made some headway, but failed to finish. After that a finely judged centre from the Albion right was nicely got away by Reid. The game was featureless for a time till it was abruptly interrupted by Boyd, the Albion centre, getting his ankle twisted. He was carried off the field and the Albion fought out the remainder of the game with nine men, Kinnard having also retired. On resumption, the Rangers were the first to make progress, and their centre wound up a brilliant run by scoring a fourth goal. The succeeding play was of an open nature, the Albion appearing to greater advantage than in the former stages of the game. The Albion scored a goal with a long shot off the left wing. And after that the play was generally open. The English team improved in their play towards the end of the game, but had the misfortune to lose another of their players, MacFarlane, at back, who had his collar-bone broken. They finished the game with eight men. Hislop scored a fifth goal for the Rangers and a disappointing game ended Rangers fife goals; Albion one goal
