Match Trivia

You couldn’t say Falkirk weren’t in the hunt. They were in the hunt all right – doing the chasing! At times, too in this game of missed chances, they almost caught up with Rangers, but they dillied and dallied round Dawson, and as the ball was passed exasperatingly from one Falkirk forwards to another. I’d have given a couple of coupons to see somebody take a whack at it. There’s where Rangers had the pull, no waiting. One glimpse at goal and they let fly. Of course, the Light Blues got off to a lucky start. Five minutes had gone when a Shaw clearance went up centre. Gillick and McKie ran. The keeper didn’t seem to realise the danger, and the centre just flicked it aside at the right moment – into the net. Thereafter some glaring misses at both ends. Falkirk had one good try; a Fiddes shot which knocked Dawson over the line, though the ball was held safely out. Then Stewart, from Fiddes equalised. Two minutes later the Ibrox lads were leading. McDowall to Duncanson, Ginger passes to McIntosh, and was in position to hit home the winger’s return. Five minutes from half-time Miller hit a penalty just slightly to Dawson’s right-hand side, and Jerry cleared. That penalty might have made a difference, for Falkirk were still full of fight. They had another near thing, a Fiddes shot with Dougie Gray doing his famous ‘act’ on the line. Rangers too, had a surfeit of misses, but they always held the upper hand, and a McIntosh goal near the end was a just reward. Falkirk’s best were Peat, Fiddes and Miller. Rice did very well indeed, when you consider he was against Venters. Rooney, showing possibilities, had no one at his side to capitalise on his cute slips. A fair enough Rangers display, with Bolt, McIntosh and Shaw the men with the drive. McDowall put in some fine tape-measured passing, was a success till injured Venters wasn’t himself, thanks a little to Rice. Injury necessitating McDowall going to outside-left and Duncanson to outside-left upset Rangers’ attack latterly! Miller missed a 40th minute penalty
