Match Trivia

It was really over by half-time. Conditions helped Dumbarton to maintain territorial equality in the first half, but the interval score reflected the real merits of the two teams. Goal average id not going to matter in this section! After Venters had scored number four from a penalty rebound, Rangers attempts were very half-hearted. They just could not help scoring their subsequent goals. Smith was actually jumping to avoid Wallace when the latter’s clearance rebounded off him for the fifth goal. George Brown could not have missed Johnstone’s low cross if he tried, nor could Smith say no to a perfect head high ball from Brown. Gillick put the eighth in Brown’s pocket. Only at the sixth goal did Dumbarton pact in. They had battered hard at a defensive door that opened only once to a clever all-in attack that ended in a well-taken goal by McGrogan. This movement, like most of Dumbarton’s attack, was initiated by Milne, a complete success in his unusual position. Williams was a bundle of bother, what a pity he is such a wee bundle. The Sons’ defence was unable to cope with the smooth power of the Ibrox attack. Soutar’s early gift in the form of a short pass back which Johnstone made into a goal, was typical of the Dumbarton rearguard. No understanding, poor covering, Wallace overworked but blameless. Best Light Blues were Shaw, Bolt, Woodburn, Smith and Venters.
