Match Trivia
Rangers feeblest exhibition of the season. Took it on the chin, and in the last half-hour, folded up like a British heavyweight. Werent prepared to take the risks. St Mirren were, and so gained a well-merited victory. Cant remember such ineptitude on the part of an apparently jewel-studded front line Gillick, Venters, Smith Marshall and Johnstone. Venters is never happy on a hard surface. It changes him from a thoroughbred to a selling plater. Marshall never seen, Johnstone, ditto. Gillick and Smith, too, will want to forget this attempt to capture the Love Street record. Result might have been different had Bolt converted the penalty kick awarded in 23 minutes when Gillick was obstructed. Bolt took a long run was this wise on a day when the footing was so difficult? and pulled the ball wide of the goal. Immediately on top of this blunder, Rangers committed another. Woodburn and Shaw failed to clear the ball at the corner of the penalty box, with Linwood harassing them. Dawson erred in rushing so far to the rescue. Should have stayed in goal. Linwood managed to get in his kick blindly, and the ball slanted into the empty goal, Gray being a yard late in his role of Assistant Goal Warden. So instead of being a goal up, Rangers were a goal down. It sure makes a difference! St Mirren realised they could win. Hetty knocks were exchanged, and first half ended on a teethy note. Second half was sheer flop. In 12 minutes, Brady was adjudged fouled as he waited on the drop of the ball from a free kick. Not so badly shaken, however, as to prevent him slamming home the penalty kick. Did Rangers fight back in the old traditional Ibrox spirit? They did not. Never looked like scoring a goal, and the last half-hour was pure pain in the neck to the nine thousand onlookers. Caskie was a great little winger, and in the first half one of his clippers from the touch-line almost earned a goal, Linwood crashing the ball against the cross-bar from six yards. Saints might have won by a larger margin. They had more chances than Rangers but shot badly. McDowall at centre-half played his best game of the season. Kelly and Urquhart, the wing-halfs, showed plenty of fighting spirit in tackling their problems while Savage was grand at right-back. Bolt missed a 23rd minute penalty
