Match Trivia

Being beaten by a better team is no disparagement. Thistle gave all they had, and no one could doubt their courage in facing up to a goal deficit within half-a-minute after the start. It would have suited most of us if the goal had gone the other way, but the art of net finding was always a Rangers monopoly. The Ibrox forwards were more in making the ball do the work. Their transfers were more precise, and they had the knack of bringing out a bit extra when required. Yet some of the clippy movements of the Firhill front line were good to see. McSpadyen did a lot of spirited running but there was something lacking in thrust, and that was made the more difficult by the sound covering-up which was a valuable adjunct to the all-round serviceable work of the Ibrox half-backs. Rangers’ forwards found it easier to draw the Partick defence which nevertheless battled sturdily, and prevented Henderson being overburdened. He had little chance with any of the goals, yet he was not much more in the picture than was Dawson. When Rangers had their chance however, they could take it, and that’s not forgetting the occasions when they hit wood. Johnstone’s goal in thirty seconds was a pretty piece of work – a long pass by Gillick – who had a tip-top first half – a fast run-in and a telling shot. That set Johnstone going, and I would dub him the number one forward of the lot. Goals by Gillick and Marshall before the interval told of the greater snap in the Ibrox front. It was a fearsome handicap for thistle to tackle, but they tackled it, and when Gray’s boot deflected the shot by Newall into the net, they came on with such breezy energy that Rangers’ defence had to go all out. This was the time when a reversal of the situation was in the offing Rangers realised it, opened the throttle, and put the issue put of all doubt by a late goal bolted by Venters
