Match Trivia

Once again, we have to record a good game spoiled by refereeing with which I didn’t agree. At Ibrox Stadium yesterday, it was early evident that the match was imbued wit a needle quality. It was allowed to spread and in the end the game had degenerated into something a recklessness that might easily have led to serious injury. Twenty minutes from the finish, Smith was taken from the field with a damaged leg, but in his case, he was not the victim of deliberate attack. His accident was of the simple nature. Whatever chances Falkirk had of destroying the Light Blues’ unbeaten record were dissipated by the Brockville fellows foolishly thinking they were operating on a field of cabbage-patch dimensions instead of the wide-open spaces of Ibrox. Almost every attack they made came to an abrupt full stop by the Falkirk forwards tumbling over themselves the result of bunching together. In the first-half, their neat outfield play took them cleverly along, but at close quarters they got into a jam. Rangers deserved their win. Their attack could produce moves that were delightful to watch, and in addition they kept an open formation that saw a dividend in four goals. Thornton signalled his return to Ibrox by scoring with an overhead kick in the second minute. A great Jerry Dawson save prevented a Kenny Dawson equaliser, and in the twenty-fifth minute, Venters shot home a lovely ground pass from Symon. Four minutes after the restart, Smith netted, following a brainy touch by Gillick, and 18 minutes later, the centre walked the leather past McKie to finish off the best movement of the match, in which the ball was in turn played by every man in Rangers’ front line. The game was hard all through, but Bobby Bolt and Symon always found time to introduce the studied touch and to these two more than any others, Rangers are due their victory
