Match Trivia

At Ibrox yesterday I saw what I consider the strangest decision ever made by a referee. It happened seventeen minutes after the start of the second half. The youngster Stead was on his way through to have a go at Jenkins, when he was pulled down about two yards inside the penalty area. St Mirren, at the time, were a goal down, the point having been scored by Waddell in the first half, direct from a corner-kick. The Buddies were, at this second-half period, doing so well that’s penalty goal might have led them on to victory. Instead, however, the referee awarded a free-kick just outside the eighteen yards line. I gasped. Si did the Paisley contingent. So, I think did the Rangers players and so, certainly, did the Love Street directors and players. No wonder. Up to it the game was good. Clean, skilful, football thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd, but after that seventeenth minute the game became a wreck. The referee appeared to me to have lost complete control, and there were incidents that led up to the ordering off of Craven. I suggest to the SFA that Craven be not punished. The penalty decision was and enough, but even worse was that which governed Rangers’ third goal. Bolt send in a peach of a cross. It was met by Gillick. Unfortunately, Torry was yards offside. The Everton man headed the ball. It was scrambled clear by Hall, who saw Johnstone making contact to hit the leather from close in. the ball struck Kelly and entered the untenanted goal. Rangers’ other goal was scored midway through the second half, Johnstone being unfairly grassed by Clark inside the 18 yards line, and Venters making sure with the spot kick. It was almost as if the fates had got something back on the referee for his entirely wrong decision in regard to the Stead incident. Rangers started like the splendid team they are, but towards the interval St Mirren came more into it, and a grand fight was in store. We had, early in the second half, Rangers so pressed that Dougie Gray had to bring off one of his celebrated goal-line clearance. After that, well it was a grand game spoiled. Craven sent-off in 77 minutes. The consequences of much criticised refereeing were within an ace of being amply demonstrated at Ibrox yesterday, when St Mirren, who considered themselves the victims of bad decisions, threatened, almost to a man, to walk off the field. The Paisley team had been denied an obvious penalty, took the decision quietly, and then had a penalty awarded against them. There was a bit of a scene, in the course of which Referee MC Dale ordered the St Mirren right back, Joe Craven, to the pavilion. At once there was a cluster round the whistler by the St Mirren players, and they were about to walk off when Jimmy Caskie suggested carrying on. One of the linesmen, whose flag-waving was questioned by the referee, followed the man with the whistle about three yards on to the field obviously registering protest
