Match Trivia
Practically the last kick of the game decided the issue of the last Scottish League match of the season at Stark’s Park yesterday, when Raith Rovers went down to Rangers by the only goal scored. The match was played before 12,000. On their first-half shooting alone Raith were worth a substantial win. In the opening minute of the game T Duncan was presented with a glorious opening, and had the winger been a little quicker on the ball Robb could never have stopped the shot. Rangers were very seldom in the picture, and all through this half their only aggressive work came from their wingers, Morton and Archibald. These two were up against a stout defence, however, and their work went for nothing. McDiarmid, as leader of the visitors’ van, was not a success, and on one occasion he sent over the bar when he had only Brown to beat. The Raith keeper was never seriously tested during this half, in fact, the only real shot for goal came from Muirhead, who essayed a long-range drive, but the keeper made a good clearance. A feature of the game at this stage was the clean kicking of McCandless, who was the most reliable member of the rangers’ defence. T Duncan could never make much headway against this player. Hennings was exceedingly unfortunate not to count from two of Archibald’s crosses. The Raith centre indulged in a good deal of shooting, and a less capable keeper than Robb would have been forced to acknowledge defeat. Rangers came more into the picture during the second session, and the whole of the forward line tried their luck at goal. As the half-progressed Rangers became desperate and tried their utmost to open their count. It was all to no purpose, however, until the last minute, when after a scrimmage in front of Brown, Muirhead scored with a high shot while the keeper was stretched on the goal line. The better team lost, and had luck been with them, Raith ought to have won by a few goals’ margin at least. They were worth it on the run of play
