Match Trivia

Rangers deserved to win last night, but hardly by this margin. Apart from the incidents I refer to in the Spotlight play was good to watch. The big difference between the team was in attack. Rangers lot had more guile, more tricks in their locker. Celtic’s by comparison, were disjoined. Divers alone possessed skilful touches. Caskie made a good appearance for Rangers, and in addition to scoring a couple of goals showed an eagerness to do well. Rangers scored 14 minutes after the start. Gray sent the ball into the Celtic penalty area. Thornton and Lyon rose for it, but the ball passed over them and dropped about 8 yards from Smith. Hogg had stepped in to cover up, but Caskie, showing a fine sense of opportunism was quicker in thought and action, and the wee fellow got there first to turn the ball well away from the goalkeeper. Although playing against a stiffish wind Rangers showed up as the more aggressive force, but Celtic defence, although frequently stretched, always recovered well when things looked dangerous. This chiefly because of Lyon, who covered a lot of ground to make clearances. However, Lyon didn’t find things so easy with Thornton making himself busy. Once again Gray saved with Dawson beaten. An angular shot by Divers was passing the keeper but the ball was kicked clear by the back as it was about to cross the line. A glorious chance was missed by Lynch who presented with an open goal, didn’t seem to know which foot to use. Shaw had time to step in and make him muff the opportunity. Six minutes from the interval the Rangers put on number two. Venters ran into shooting position and let go from 20 yards. Smith looked to have the shot covered but the leather struck Lyon and was diverted inside the keeper’s right-hand post. Five minutes after the resumption Dawson palmed down a corner-kick and went in chase of it but couldn’t gain position. Carruth met the ball and hit it past the goalkeeper and everybody else into the net, but the point was disallowed for offside. It looked a good goal to me. Celtic has resumed the game on the offensive and denial of this goal spurred them to further effort. There was plenty of needle in the game now so much so that four players, two from each side were seen to swing blows at one another. The crowd roared as the teams set a hot pace, but saw Thornton add Rangers’ third, hitting the ball across from Venters. This after a dozen minute. Five minutes later Thornton beat Lyon and raced on to score a fourth. Seconds afterwards Caskie scored a fifth. He should have been whistled up, however, for offside. Ten minutes from the end Paterson converted a penalty kick for Celtic. Both Venters and Divers were sent-off after 85 minutes
